March Meeting of US Gulf Branch of Nautical Institute

Over 50 members and guests, including members of Houston Chapter of the Kings Point Alumni, attended the US Gulf Branch technical meeting, addressing the requirements of the new Vessel General Permit (VGP) at the Hess Club, Houston, on 11th March 2009.

Speakers were:

1. Dr. Ryan Albert – Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Headquarters in Washington – Dr. Albert is the main lead from EPA for the Vessel General Permit,
2. CDR Robert L. Smith, JR, – USCG, Chief Prevention Dept, Sector Houston, Galveston, and

Spring meeting: a reminder that our next meeting will take place at the Hess Club on Westheimer; the date is Wednesday 11th March. While some of us will be out of town on that date, we would appreciate a good turnout by those who can make it. Our success as a club depends on good attendance at our functions. The presentation will be on the subject of EPA-NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System), and VGP (Vessel General Permit), which was discussed in the previous newsletter.

Minutes of the Annual General Meeting (2006-2007)

The Annual General Meeting of the Nautical Institute/ US Gulf Branch, was held at the Black Labrador Restaurant on the west side of Houston, Texas, on Tuesday, 12 September, 2006.

Twenty members and guests gathered socially in The Churchill Room from 1800 hrs.

It was established there was a quorum present consistent with The Nautical Institute’s recommendations.

At approximately 1900 hrs. the Honorary Chairman, Captain Robert Sheen, welcomed those present and brought the meeting to order.

USCG Sector Houston-Galveston ’ Vessel Traffic Services’ (VTS) facility ,

located at 9640 Clinton Drive, in Galena Park,( Houston, Texas)

The tour has been kindly arranged by the US Coastguard for

You may have heard from the Branch Honorary Secretary, Captain Ian Walker, MNI, that the first technical dinner meeting of 2008 is to be held at the Black Labrador Restaurant tomorrow, 23 January,2008

Our host will be the Assistant Chairman, Captain Alistair Macnab MNI due to Captain Chopra's conflict with other maritime interests........i.e.work!

Please make a special effort to attend this interesting presentation on

The 2007-2008 Annual General Meeting and Dinner will now take place ONE DAY LATER, on Wednesday, 26 September, 2007 , (not on Tuesday, 25 September, 2007, as previously announced). The venue (The Black Labrador Restaurant) and program will remain the same.

Founded in 1972, the Nautical Institute is a thriving international professional body for qualified mariners, with 40 branches world-wide and some 7,000 members in over 110 countries. The US Gulf Branch of the Nautical Institute meets in Houston, Texas and is one of four branches in North America providing a vehicle for blue water, brown water and offshore members of the maritime community, both afloat and ashore, to exchange technical information and advice of mutual benefit and assistance to the industry.
